1 Blood clotting

People taking the pills may have a higher risk of blood clotting. High estrogen pills further increase this risk. In some cases, these clots can become life-threatening if they travel through the bloodstream to the brain, lungs, and heart.

2 Heart disease and stroke

The risk of stroke or heart attack may be higher in people taking the pills. Some studies suggest that the risk of ischemic stroke (which is caused by blockage) increases for every 10 micrograms of estrogen plus five years of oral contraceptive use. Research results on this relationship have been mixed. According to new research, the relationship between hormonal contraception use and breast cancer may actually depend on the type of tumor. People taking the pills also have a higher risk of developing uterus cancer.

4 Migraine

People who experience migraine headaches should avoid contraceptive pills that contain estrogen. The World Health Organization (WHO) does not recommend the use of pills containing estrogen for people age 35 and older who experience migraines. On the other hand, they can be beneficial for those who face migraine during periods.

5 Bladder infections

Research shows that some hormonal contraceptive pills may increase the risk of gallbladder disease, but oral contraceptives are not among them. The use of the progestin and levonorgestrel intrauterine device (IUD) in Depo-Provera increases this risk. These hepatocellular adenomas can turn into cancer in about 4% of cases.
